Fresh Scallops at a Local Fish Shop

Scallop is one of the seafood that I would not eat raw in anywhere but around my hometown. I have been so spoiled with the taste of fresh raw scallop in Hokkaido since my childhood that those at restaurants in other places smell too fishy for me (or I'm just being picky). There is one local fish shop in Tokoro Town that I highly recommend if you want to try really fresh scallop.

They sell incredibly fresh raw scallops at reasonable prices, for example a package of 300g at 1,000 yen. Each scallop is so thick and has such a rich taste, almost sweet. This shop is popular among locals and sells other kinds of seafood too, including shrimp, salmon, sea urchin depending on the season.

What my family likes to do is that we buy some scallops there and have a picnic with other local food that we get on the way. We bring our chopsticks and soy sauce from home, but you can get them at any convenience store you pass by. Make sure to get some shells from the shop to pour soy sauce and dip in!
