Hot Spring in Forest: Sanko Onsen
If you are a big fan of natural hot springs travelling in the Eastern Hokkaido, I would highly recommend Sanko Onsen near Lake Kussharo. This is such an authentic onsen that allows you to immerse yourself and get relaxed in nature (it looks like the ones in the Ghibli movies…?)
It is surrounded by a forest and just behind the woods is the lake. You will be welcomed by a friendly owner couple and cozy and nostalgic interior of the house.
The onsen here is very simple. There is only a large outdoor bathtub, with no tap or shower head, just to enjoy bathing. I went there on a rainy day in late summer, but it was a really nice feeling to soak in a hot spring with a fresh and cold breeze.
The water here keeps flowing in directly from the source. It is 100% natural spring water of mild alkali, which is said to be good for sore muscles, arthritis, back pain, shoulder pain and so on.
A traditional Japanese style pension is available here as well. It costs 7,200-7,800 yen per night, including homey and healthy dinner and breakfast. You might be able to see little friends from the forest if you stay here?
